"><p>Wie schon im letzten Monat berichten wir euch auch in diesem wieder von einigen interessanten Dingen, die bei uns passiert sind. <p>Am 07. Mai wurde, nach einer Sitzung des Team Network, die Aktualisierung der Software unseres alten Core-Routers angegangen. Wie ihr hoffentlich nicht gemerkt habt, lief das ohne Probleme. Dies ist nicht zuletzt auch der Migration unseres <a href="https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uplink">Uplink</a> auf die neuen Core-Router zu verdanken, die bereits am 16. März diesen Jahres stattfand.</p>
<p>Bei dem alten Core-Router handelt es sich um drei physische Geräte, die zu einem logischen zusammengefasst sind. Passend dazu sein Name: „<a href="https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Janus_(Mythologie)">Ianus</a>“. Bei den Geräten handelt es sich jeweils um FlexFabric 5900 von HPE.</p>
<p>Auch die neuen Core-Router sind zu dritt, verbleiben allerdings logisch getrennt. Gerätetyp sind hier drei Omniswitch 6900-V72 von Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise.</p>
<p>Neben den technischen galt es auch die sozialen Verbindungen zu pflegen. Zu diesem Zweck fand am 29. Mai unser Jahresessen statt. Wie auch die vergangenen Jahre wurde sich dort munter ausgetauscht, mit Lehrenden und Forschenden der TU Dresden, dem Studentenwerk, dem Zentrum für Informationsdienste und Hochleistungsrechnen der TU Dresden (ZIH) oder Unternehmen mit denen wir beispielsweise zur Beschaffung von Netzwerktechnik zusammenarbeiten.</p>
<p>Zuletzt noch ein Nachtrag aus dem April: wir versorgen alle Bewohner:innen des <a href="https://www.studentenwerk-dresden.de/wohnen/gaestehausdetails.html">Internationalen Gästehauses (IGH)</a> mit WLAN, wobei in mehreren Zimmern zuletzt Empfangsprobleme festgestellt wurden. Zur Verbesserung der Abdeckung wurden am 24. April in fünf Etagen jeweils ein weiterer <a href="https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aruba_Networks">Aruba</a> <a href="https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wireless_Access_Point">Access Point</a> installiert.</p>

"><p>On 2024-06-03 13:14:57 road work caused damage to the fibre optic cable to Borsbergstraße 34. Therefore, network access failed for Borsbergstraße 34 as well as Neuberinstraße 15. The latter is affected due to Borsbergstraße 34 being the sole provider for it's network.</p>
<p>In order to restore network access, a radio link between Wundtstraße 3 and Borsbergstraße 34 has been installed on Monday evening until the early hours of Tuesday. Due to a configuration mistake, access couldn't be recovered until late Tuesday evening.</p>
<p>Unfortunately, there is huge decrease in bandwidth paired with a strong increase in latency. We as well as the Studentenwerk are working intensively to reach an improvement of the situation.</p></div>

"><p>What does the AG DSN actually do? Below a few highlights from the past month April.</p>
<p>On April 7th, a few active members met at the NOC, our large office, for <a href="https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tux_(Maskottchen)">Tux</a> sewing.
Fabrics were bought the day before.
The goal was to manufacture two penguins, a blue and a orange one.</p>

<p>Orange, that's the color of the student network „<a href="https://www.selfnet.de/">Selfnet</a>“.
On April 13th, it celebrated it's 25th anniversary, five active members of the AG DSN took part.
During the event, the orange Tux found a new home.</p>

<p>Last but not least, a bit more technical topic:
for internal communication, the AG DSN runs a <a href="https://github.com/mattermost/mattermost">Mattermost</a> as well as a <a href="https://xmpp.org/">XMPP</a> server, <a href="https://prosody.im/">Prosŏdy</a>.
Starting from April 16th, a <a href="https://github.com/coturn/coturn">Coturn</a> joined the Prosŏdy to provide <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/STUN">STUN</a> as well as <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Traversal_Using_Relays_around_NAT">TURN</a> functionality.
With these services in place, active members can now initiate audio and video calls via XMPP.</p>
<p>Not mentioned in this post are the numerous unspectecular tasks, being accomplished everyday:
answering email tickets, providing support in person, bank imports and many more.</p>
